The Memorial Foundation for July 20, 1944 developed from the “Aid Foundation for July 20, 1944.” This organization was founded in 1949 on the initiative of survivors and bereaved family members of the German resistance and the then German Federal President Theodor Heuß. Its most important purpose was to support the members of the resistance and their families, particularly the relatives of those murdered in connection with July 20,1944.Today’s foundation has the main role of preserving the legacy of the resistance by keeping its memory alive.
The foundation focuses its work on young people, Bundeswehr soldiers and the international community, organizing exhibitions, symposia, travel activities and memorial events. The central tasks are the preparation and organization of the annual memorial celebrations marking July 20, 1944 in Stauffenbergstraße and Plötzensee in Berlin, along with the German federal government and the ZDWV.

Finally, the foundation advises and cares for surviving resistance members, their families and also other victims of the Nazi regime.

The foundation works in close cooperation with the German Resistance Memorial Center and related institutions (for example the Forschungsgemeinschaft 20. Juli e.V., Freya von Moltke Foundation, Krzyzowa Foundation for European Understanding, Weiße Rose Stiftung e.V.).
